Crete Sinesi literally means Clay of Siena
Here the hills change color according to the seasons.
This territory has been photographed and published so extensively that no one can say they have never seen an image of Crete Senesi. Crete Sinesi literally means Clay of Siena. This territory is characterized by a particular type of clay soil known as Mattaione. Here the hills change color according to the seasons, ranging from lush green in spring, golden yellow in summer, brown in autumn, to gray in winter.
The solitary oaks and cypresses, and a few scattered farmhouses, are the only signs that it is inhabited. This landscape has been described, by many, as "Lunar". To travel the road of the Crete Senesi we start from Siena up to Trequanda, passing many famous villages on the way, such as Montalcino, San Giovanni d'Asso, and Asciano.
